Richard S. "Rick" Law

Richard Scott Law of Hamilton, age 65, eldest son of the late Richard C. and Mary C. Law quietly passed away after a progressive illness on a bright Saturday morning, December 14, 2024, at Fort Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was born February 12, 1959. Rick was a 1977 graduate of Taft Senior High School in Hamilton where he excelled on the hardwood playing basketball with a finesse that resonated in him having one of the purest jump shots among his peers. Rick’s athletic prowess from Hamilton Little League baseball, through Wilson Jr. High School and at Taft was well known in local circles and a point of pride for his parents and the stuff of legend for his little brother. Athletics and academics came naturally for Rick. Beyond basketball Rick was a dominate pitcher in Little League and hunted down fly balls while playing in the Babe Ruth League. With a passion for baseball, Rick idolized the Cincinnati Reds’ great Frank Robinson and even had the chance to meet his hero when visiting Crosley Field. For Rick, it was a rare show of outward enthusiasm, as he was prone to internalize his emotions with most things, yet his athleticism allowed Rick to fully express himself in ways like nothing else could. Academics was another area which Rick showed an immense natural gift and ability to express himself. At times an evocative and provocative thinker, Rick excelled throughout his years in Hamilton Public Schools. His acumen in mathematics was always impressive as well as the bane of his younger brother who could never grasp those complicated concepts as easily and well as his older brother. After graduation from Taft, Rick briefly attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee then returned to Hamilton marrying his first wife in 1979. Two years later they moved to Houston, Texas where Rick began working for the Prudential Insurance Company as an IT specialist. It was while in Houston that Rick found his professional niche in a position that allowed his critical thinking and mathematics to converge successfully. Upon returning to Hamilton, Rick began a long 28-year career with Butler County working within the IT division, Treasurer’s office and later the Auditor’s office. Rick’s co-workers would attest to his easy-going manner, his quick dry witted humor and fascinating ability to resolve complex computer issues with a sense of ease. One of those wonderful areas in which Rick’s mind and athleticism intersected was on the golf course. Blessed with magnificent hand-eye coordination, Rick Law was a naturally gifted player on the links. There were numerous weekends on the course with his father and the occasional trip to Myrtle Beach which showcased Rick’s golfing skills and often overshadowing his father’s skills, which only made Rick grin a bit wider. An introvert by nature, Rick Law possessed a quickness in the ability to use his dry wit and at times ignited an entire roomful response, leaving people asking, “Did he really just say that?” His humor and quick wit captured those who knew him by surprise which gave him great delight. Rick was blunt, rarely afraid to tell you what he thought and at times he would say what others were thinking, but afraid to say out loud. Those who knew him best could appreciate his candor and willingness to share thoughts. One of the strongest attributes of Rick’s personality was a deep if not outright fierce loyalty. Loyalty to family and friends. While he steeled his emotions with many of those he loved, he would not waiver in supporting. Rick’s love for his family and friends was not always on display in an overt sense, yet we all knew he cared and loved us. In his own way, he shared this love and loyalty. Like all of us, Rick had his own personal struggles and yet he found ways to support others who struggled. Humor was his vehicle of choice to let others know he was there to support them. Rick Law will be missed. His laughter, his bold statements and his genuine caring of those who loved him are a significant loss, leaving a void and hole in our hearts. Yet what he likely never fully accepted was how much the rest of us will miss him. A part of Rick Law’s family died with him on December 14th, and he should be remembered as an appreciative son, a caring father, a loving husband, a proud big brother, a stubbornly loyal friend and a Paw Paw to grandchildren he left too soon. Rick leaves behind a large extended and blended family that will miss his presence this Christmas and for years to come. In 2002 Rick met the love of his life in Beverly McNabb Law. Together Rick and Bev forged their own path in a relationship which fulfilled each of them in ways neither had ever before experienced. In addition to Bev, surviving are children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts. Rick’s surviving children include Megan Thompson Law Williamson (Kris) of Dillsboro, Indiana, Richard Ryan Law (Kim) of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Jason (Carrie) McNabb, Justin (Beth) McNabb and Lacy (JR) Huber all of Hamilton, Ohio. Paw Paw Law also is survived by 15 grandchildren: Jesse, Hadley, Hollie, Aleysia, Kendra, Kaden, Alex, Gracie, Jake, Hailey, Kate, Collin, Layne, Luke and Londyn. Rick is survived by his younger brother, Gregory Law of Beavercreek, Ohio, a beloved Aunt Shirley Adams of Evansville, Indiana, nieces and nephews Madison, Tyler, McKinely Harrison and cousins Marta Fitzpatrick and Jeff Phelps. Visitation will be at Weigel Funeral Home 980 NW Washington Blvd Hamilton, Ohio 45013 Friday December 20, 2024 from 11:00am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00pm.
