Ronald Dean Smith

Ronald Dean Smith was born on January 23, 1949 in Hamilton, Ohio to Daniel and Olive Smith. On September 13, 2014 at the age of 65, he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Ron served proudly in the United States Marines Corps and retired from Champion International Paper after 30 years of service. His greatest joys were family, grandchildren, the Cincinnati Bengals, and working in his yard. He also enjoyed traveling to the farm in Kentucky and to the ocean in Gloucester, MA. Ron loved to watch his grandson play football, basketball and baseball as well as watch his granddaughter dance. Every Sunday during football season, Ron prepared chicken wings for family and friends as they rooted for his beloved Bengals because he thought every year was going to be “the year!” Ron took his love of working outside and volunteered caring for the grounds at Hospice of Hamilton. He would often bring his grandson to volunteer with him and met new friends Michael, Paul and Charlie. He was also a previous member of the Freemasons and the Fraternal Order of Police Associates. Ron is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his children, Ann McDonough and her husband Joe, Ronda Smith, and Chance Smith and his significant other Mercy; his stepsons, Jason Birgel and Luke Birgel; his beloved grandchildren Trey and Nizhoni; his twin brother, Donnie and brother Bobby; his sisters, Myrtle, Barbara, Dolly, and Pauline. And his pets, Cory KY and Socks. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Olive Smith; his brothers, Eugene, Harold, Jimmy, Darrel, Billy, Red, and Blackie; his sisters, Sis and Gerry. And his pets, Bitsy, Poo, Lucy, Tucker, Bo and Ruby. His memorial service will be held at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 N. W. Washington Blvd., Hamilton, OH on Saturday, September 27th at 4:30pm. Visitation will be from 2-4:30pm. Guests are invited to share Ron’s love for the Bengals and wear their Bengals gear in honor of him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Hamilton, 1010 Eaton Ave, Hamilton, OH, 45013. The family would like to express its deep appreciation to everyone at Hospice of Hamilton, especially Deanna and Pam, who helped fulfill Ron’s wish of passing at home. We would also like to thank Luke for “running” all of Ron’s errands when he no longer could.
