Carl August Leyrer

Carl August Leyrer passed away at Berkeley Square Health Care on Sunday, September 27, 2009. Carl A. Leyrer was born on May 31, 1916 to Charles and Anna Christine (Schmucker) Leyrer in Hamilton, Ohio and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1934. He then attended Miami University and Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia. He served his internship at Bethesda Hospital, Cincinnati, and did post-graduate work at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Ill., before beginning his surgical residency at Polyclinic Hospital in New York City. His residency was interrupted for military service, where he served with the 4136th Army Air Force and was promoted to the rank of Major. After his discharge, Dr. Leyrer completed his surgical residency at Missouri Baptist Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. He met DeLoris Robertson while in the service and they were married on April 12, 1946 at Tinker Field, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death in January of 1997. In 1948 he returned to Hamilton, where he was given the name “Dr. Carl” and began private practice in general surgery. He continued his practice until his retirement in 1985, completing 50 years of service in the medical community. Dr. Leyrer was chief of staff at both Mercy and Fort Hamilton-Hughes Hospitals. He was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, served as president of the Hamilton-Fairfield Academy of Medicine and president of the Hamilton Blood Bank. Dr. Leyrer served on the Board of Directors of the Butler County Auto Club .One of Dr. Carl’s favorite pastimes was spending time at his weekend home at Lake Santee in Indiana. His two brothers, previously deceased, Earl C. Leyrer, M.D., a general practitioner and Ralph H. Leyrer, M.D., a pediatrician also practiced medicine for many years in Hamilton. All three brothers graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. His twin sisters Dorothy Lacker and Marge Finch survive him. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He is survived by one son, James C. Leyrer (Joyce) and one daughter, Nancy A. Rogers (Randy). He also leaves five grandchildren, Brad Leyrer (Jen), Becky Houchin (Dan), Christy Kennedy (Brian), Amy Schlatter (Mike) and Steve Rogers. He also leaves seven great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Berkeley Square for the years of care and compassion shown to “Doc”. Thanks are also extended to Dr. George Manitsas and VITAS. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1285 Main Street, Hamilton, on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Jud officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 235 Ludlow Street, Hamilton, OH 45011 or to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1285 Main Street, Hamilton, Ohio 4501.
