Ellen N. Flegal

Ellen N. Flegal age 95, of Berkeley Square, Hamilton, died Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Berkeley Square. She was born April 16, 1920 in Coshocton County, Ohio, the daughter of Emmett W. and Estella (Wright) Nethers. She was a 1938 graduate of Jefferson High School, Dresden, Ohio, and attended Ohio University. On December 24, 1941, she married Robert P. Flegal of Zanesville, Ohio. They came to Hamilton, Ohio in 1952. He preceded her in death on July 9, 1988. Ellen was a member of the Presbyterian Church and an active volunteer at Mercy Hospital for 35 years, volunteering twice a week at Mercy Hamilton, then once a week at Mercy Fairfield, until the end of 2005. Ellen was a life member at Mercy Auxiliary, former Auxiliary board member, and worked on fund raising projects for the Auxiliary and Mercy Hospital. She started the “Gift of Light” Christmas project at Mercy Hamilton in 1992, with individual lighted trees on the hospital grounds in memory or in honor of a loved one. Ellen also enjoyed shuffleboard with her many friends at Berkeley Square. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Laird of Hamilton, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Linda (Luechauer) Flegal of Hamilton, Ohio; step-granddaughter, Debbie (Laird) Spencer and her husband, Ed of Hamilton, Ohio; step-granddaughter, Deanna (Laird) Childress of Akron, Ohio; niece, Nancy (Bob) Wallin and family of Cape Coral, Florida; nephew, Bruce (Sue) Nethers of Apple Valley, California; nephew, Brian (Sue) Nethers and family of Okeechobee, Florida; cousins and many friends. Ellen greatly appreciated her daughter-in-law’s loving family members. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert “Bob” Flegal; her son, Alan R. Flegal; her brother, Jack Nethers; and her son-in-law, Robert Laird. Following Ellen’s wishes, a private service will be held at Weigel Funeral Home, 980 N.W. Washington Boulevard, with Dr. John H. H. Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
